Football is back, and it refused to wait even one second — the first game of the year was won with no time left on the clock.

The weekend in one paragraph

The NFL's warm-up season opened in Canton, Ohio — the small town that hosts the Hall of Fame — with the traditional Hall of Fame Game on Thursday night, and it delivered a finish real games would envy: the Carolina Panthers beat the Arizona Cardinals 33–30 when undrafted rookie quarterback Haynes King dived over the goal line from five yards out as time expired. Two days later, on the same site, five retired greats — headlined by quarterback Drew Brees — were formally enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Preseason proper starts Thursday, and for once Europe gets all of it free (more below).

Every result, with the story

Carolina Panthers 33 – 30 Arizona Cardinals (Hall of Fame Game, Thu 6 Aug — kicked off 01:00 UK Friday) — Arizona thought they'd stolen it when Bryson Green's go-ahead touchdown catch with 1:55 left was awarded on video review; Carolina answered with a final drive that ended in King's dive on the last play. Both teams' rookie quarterbacks shone: King went 21 of 34 for 180 yards and two touchdown passes (plus 39 rushing yards), while Arizona's third-round pick Carson Beck was near-perfect at 15 of 19 for 188 yards and a score.

A note on preseason: these are practice games. Stars play a few series or not at all, results don't count, and the real contest is players at the bottom of the roster fighting for jobs. That's exactly why an undrafted rookie was throwing in the fourth quarter — and why his night mattered enormously to him and not at all to any standings.

Three things that mattered

1. Five legends walked into Canton
Saturday's ceremony inducted the Hall of Fame Class of 2026: quarterback Drew Brees, receiver Larry Fitzgerald, linebacker Luke Kuechly, kicker Adam Vinatieri and running back Roger Craig. Fitzgerald — a Cardinal his entire career — told the crowd he owed it all to coach Dennis Green, who first hired him as a 14-year-old ball boy and later drafted him to Arizona. The Hall of Fame is American football's highest individual honour; you have to be voted in, not just retire.

2. The Browns still don't know who their quarterback is
Cleveland's training camp features the league's most-watched position battle: veteran Deshaun Watson against rookie Shedeur Sanders, with both getting extended opportunities and no starter named. Genuine quarterback battles are rare — most teams settle the position for years at a time — which is why this one is soaking up so much American media oxygen. Their preseason opener next Saturday (18:00 UK — see below) is effectively a public audition.

3. Europe gets the entire preseason free this year

• Brian Branch, Detroit Lions defender — torn Achilles last December; reportedly headed for the PUP list (physically-unable-to-perform: a holding pen for injured players) and unlikely to return before December.
• Nic Scourton, Carolina Panthers pass-rusher — torn ACL before camp began; his season is over before it started.
• Nick Emmanwori, Seattle Seahawks — opens camp on the PUP list.
• Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback — the league's biggest star is back at camp after last season's Week 15 knee injury; how much he practises is still being carefully managed.
• Better news: Travis Hunter, Jacksonville's two-way rookie sensation, is fully recovered from the knee injury that ended his first season and is cleared for everything.

The table, minus the noise

There isn't one yet — preseason results don't count towards anything. The first table appears after the season opener: Thursday 10 September, 01:20 UK — New England Patriots at Seattle Seahawks.
